Have you ever felt an urgent need in your heart to find fulfillment beyond your already "perfect life"? I remember clearly that day when that need "to give" became very clear in my mind. Our beautiful home in Austin TX with a pool where our kids and their friends used to gather and play, suddenly was not enough. My husband Joel had been helping athletes to recover from injuries for the last 10 years and I owned a financial firm. We enjoyed so many blessings and yet a small seed of discontent haunted us. There was a voice in my head saying over and over, “Come on! You were born to do more. “
In August 2006, we began to seek the uncomfortable looking for surroundings that would keep us humble and discontented enough to stretch our limits. We started working in a special needs orphanage in Piedras Negras, Mexico run by a couple in their 60’s who would change more than 50 adult diapers each day, putting food in a blender to prepare it for feeding tubes, and who used an empty orange juice container as a pump for a make-shift respirator. Here is where we found true joy. We amassed the resources to build new facilities and hire professional physical therapists. This was the start of our journey to wealth beyond money.
We had been using AdvoCare products because great stamina requires great health. We began sharing the products with others to because we saw the option to be able to work from anywhere and design our own work schedule. We have a passion to help others physically and financially reach their goals and take their journey to a life of making a difference. In 2009, we moved our family to Mexico in a dirt-floor house without fully running water to develop a greater understanding of the difficulties of daily life. What we found there was an extended family. The people around loved us in spite of our quirky attempts to assimilate into the culture. They taught us to make homemade tortillas that would rise with air pockets even though we showed up with all the hair burned off our forearms from lighting the antiquated gas stove with a rolled newspaper. We learned the art of the tamale, the beauty of mariachi music, the tradition of Latino dance and the appreciation for time spent with an unhurried hectic schedule. Our two sponsored sons adopted us first by carrying our water containers and shooing away unwelcome donkeys and pigs from our yard. It was wealth in joy and currency in love even when money was short. We are forever in debt to our Hispanic family for teaching us the true meaning of freedom.
So when AdvoCare began its venture into the Hispanic Market in 2017, we jumped at the opportunity to spread this message to the community in the US. Because lifting the Hispanic community in health and prosperity is more than a financial win; it is the potential to make a difference in Mexico and South America. It means our boys in Mexico may one day have the opportunity to earn income online with markets beyond their bodega and their barrios. It means that given encouragement and coaching, they can invest in their schools and communities to become stronger and more vibrant for future generations. It means using the resources we have here to invest in the people of South America who are willing to someday fight against the corruption and unwelcome social systems. It means to contribute to our common goal of more $1 million Hispanic businesses with the prestige and honor they deserve.
And it starts with AdvoCare here in Philadelphia. With a strong Chamber of Commerce full of business leaders we have both the opportunity and responsibility to be examples and proponents of healthy Hispanic families who are changing their corner of the world. You can be a part of this! We are looking to partner with business professionals who want to rise up opportunities and programs of health and vitality for Philadelphia and beyond.
